Driven by the principles of sustainability and regeneration, Donegal County Council aims to provide housing within the fabric of existing towns and villages. In addition to incorporating the urban design qualities associated with existing towns, and acknowledging past patterns of development and relevant historical lessons, we aim to provide high density housing schemes with high quality design to produce more sustainable neighbourhoods. Depending on needs specific to areas, the preferred location is primarily infill sites, or areas as close to the town centre as possible. This reduces the dependence on the car and allows people to live closer to amenities such as shops and schools.
A focus would also be to provide a number of smaller schemes relating to their locality which has a sense of local identity, both with the town and its inhabitants. This would enable the buildings and the residents to successfully integrate into an area, enhancing both its physical and social characteristics.
