Following a local initiative a Road Safety Conference has been organised in Donegal and will be held in the Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny on the 1st and 2nd of May 2008. Registration for the conference may be done on-line at the website below or at the Clanree Hotel on either day.
Often people feel helpless at a time of loss and many people feel somebody should be doing something about the carnage on our roads. Prominent speakers with a specific remit in relation to road safety from the many agencies will address this conference but the focus of this conference will be on initiatives by individuals to make travel safer on our roads.
Various reports have highlighted the increased risk and incidence of crashes in the border areas in Ireland, north and south. Consequently, this conference will hear from speakers from both sides of the border who have made their own personal and specific contributions to road safety.
In conjunction with the conference a schools' essay competition has been organized. The competition is open to all students in the Donegal who are aged 16 or over. The winner of the competition will participate in the conference and will be invited to read their essay to the conference. There are three prizes of €250, €200 and €100 for the winners of the essay competition. Also, the school with the winning entry will also receive €250.
It is hoped to develop a community based road safety support network from this conference. This network would be to compliment existing statutory agencies and provide an additional road safety awareness capability within communities that will be supported by the statutory agencies.
The conference website is www.donegalroadsafetyconference.com and further details are available from the site or contact the organisers through donegalroadsafetyconference@gmail.com or by phone to 087 2217202
Some of the speakers have taken personal tragedies and turned them into positive action. Everyone is welcome to attend the conference, so if you believe you can and want to do something please come along to the Clanree Hotel on the 1st or 2nd of May.
