Council appealing to water consumers to conserve water
Donegal County Council is appealing to water consumers to conserve water particularly during the month of August 2005.
Referring to the low level of rainfall in July this year, Mr. Jim Holohan, Director of Water, Environment and Emergency in the Council said that “rainfall during the month of July has been well below average, and this trend has continued into August. As a result, some of the lakes from which raw water is sourced for supply are at extremely low levels and this problem is being experienced county-wide”.
Mr. Holohan added that “the risk of water shortages remains particularly high throughout the month of August as the county experiences an increased demand from tourism. The up-coming Fleadh Ceoil in Letterkenny, together with festivals and major gatherings in other towns and villages, will increase the demand for water”.
Mr Holohan urged people to “refrain from washing cars and watering gardens, to ensure that taps are not left running at home, at work or in fields and to report any suspected leaks or wastage to the local Donegal County Council offices”.
He continued to urge water consumers throughout the county to play their part in conserving this precious resource and stated that water conservation is the business of everyone and that the continued support of the public is very much appreciated.
