Council welcomes Donegal Town Metropolitan Area Network
Donegal County Council welcomes the announcement of the construction of a Metropolitan Area Network for Donegal Town.
Following the announcement by Minister for Communications Marine & Natural Resources Mr Noel Dempsey T.D. at a press briefing in Donegal Town on 5th December 2005, the Council’s Head of Information Systems Mr. Brian Boyle warmly welcomed the development.
“The announcement today is highly significant both for Donegal Town and the County generally. This now means that the Council will begin construction of 6 Metropolitan Area Network projects in the County in the second quarter of 2006” stated Mr. Boyle. “Detailed design has already commenced for the construction of fibre optic networks in the following towns: Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town, Ballybofey/Stranorlar, Buncrana and Carndonagh. By early 2007 all towns in the County with a population of over 1500 people will have fibre based open access networks providing advanced telecommunication services as is the case currently in Letterkenny.”
Donegal County Council has long advocated the benefits of broadband as a means of reducing the County’s peripheral disadvantage and providing a key tool to assist the economic and social development of the County. Broadband availability is essential to support the efforts of the development agencies to attract and nurture knowledge-based business in the County and is categorised as Critical Infrastructure for Donegal.
The Council’s telecommunication’s mission is to utilise all available programmes as well as it’s own resources to provide interconnected, competitive and resilient backbone networks which will facilitate the roll-out of advanced services in all areas of the County, both urban and rural.
