Minister officially opens €8 million Carndonagh Sewerage Scheme
Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr. Dick Roche T.D. visited Carndonagh today to officially open the new €8.6 million Carndonagh Sewerage Scheme.
Funded by the Department of the Environment and The Cohesion Fund under the European Union, this scheme has been designed to facilitate the future growth of the town for a period of twenty years with a projected domestic, commercial and industrial population of 5,083.
This wastewater treatment works is also designed to serve a population of 750 from neighbouring Malin, with the wastewater collection system for Malin to be constructed at a later stage.
Minister Roche congratulated both the elected members and Council officials on the completion of this state of the art facility and stated that “modern, efficient sewerage facilities are crucial if communities are to grow and prosper in a way that maintains the high environmental standards for which Ireland is renowned”.
He added that “not only will this treatment works facilitate sustainable residential development and economic expansion in Carndonagh, it also ensures that water quality in the river Donagh is preserved to the highest standards. Better water quality in the river is also a boon to the valuable recreational resources downstream that is Trawbreaga Bay where locals and visitors alike can take part in nature activities and other water based pursuits or simply enjoy the natural beauty of the shoreline”.
On top of the €8 million invested in Carndonagh Sewerage Scheme, County Donegal is set to get more than €318 million for the National Development Plan for 57 new water and sewerage schemes. Speaking at the official opening Clr. Patrick McGowan, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council stated that “this level of investment in vital infrastructure in the County will help Donegal compete as an attractive location for economic development and job creation”.
Speaking in the Carndonagh Public Services Centre, Minister Roche paid tribute to Donegal County Councils commitment to improving customer service and referring specifically to the new public services centre stated that “it is only right that the people of Donegal, our customers and clients, can conduct their business in such pleasant and discreet surroundings and it is only right that we make it as easy as possible for them to access the services they need”.
