Appeal to Water Consumers

Comhairle Chondae Dhun na nGall / Donegal County Council

APPEAL TO WATER CONSUMERS

Donegal County Council appeals to people to conserve water due to the extremely low levels of rainfall experienced in the first two months of 2006.

Data from Met Eireann indicates that rainfall at Malin Head during January and February (to date) 2006 was well below expected levels. Rainfall recorded in the month of January was less than half that recorded for January 2005. A similar out-turn appears likely for the month of February, despite some heavy rain last week. Average trends indicate that January and February are usually among the wettest months in the first half of the year. Deficits of the scale already experienced are unlikely to be made up before the summer. Therefore people are urged to use water sparingly so as to avoid shortages in the late spring and summer months this year.

Some of the lakes from which raw water is abstracted for water supplies around the county are already at extremely low levels for the time of year. This problem is being experienced particularly in the north of the county, but our concerns are county-wide.

Please do not leave taps running at home, at work or in fields. Please check for faulty plumbing as dripping taps or running cisterns can account for considerable losses. Any suspected leaks on watermains or wastage should be reported to the County Council in your local area office.

The cooperation of every community is required if we are to avert water shortages later in the year. Everyone is urged to play your part in conserving this precious resource. Water conservation is everybody’s business.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Director of Service,
