Contracts Signing for Construction of Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny
Contracts were signed for the construction of the new Regional Cultural Centre building in Letterkenny today (Thursday 28 July 2005). Arising from the receipt of tenders, the contract has been awarded to McDermot & Trearty Limited, Contractors, Cappry, Ballybofey, County Donegal. The nominated Sub Contractors are Michael Nugent Ltd, for the Mechanical Contract, and O’Neill Electrics, for the Electrical Contract. The estimate Construction cost is set at €3,730,000.
The Contract signing took place in the County House Lifford and was attended by Councillor Dessie Larkin, Cathaoirleach Donegal County Council, Councillor Damien Blake Mayor Letterkenny Town Council, Michael Mc Loone County Manager and representatives of McDermot & Trearty Limited Contractors, Donegal Community & Cultural Development Company Limited and the Design Team led by MacGabhann Architects Letterkenny.
The Contractors expect to be on site at Cove Hill Letterkenny, adjacent to An Grianán Theatre in the first week of August. It is intended that the building will be completed by November 2006. The Project is being part funded by: Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Town Council, Department of Arts Sports and Tourism, International Fund for Ireland, North West Region Cross Border Group Interreg IIIA and Arts Council/ Film Board.
This landmark building is being developed adjacent to An Grianán Theatre and is designed by award winning Letterkenny based MacGabhann Architects. The 1,700 m2 premises will consist of art galleries, workshops, a 140-seat studio cinema/ theatre, digital media studios and music rehearsal rooms.
The Regional Cultural Centre will build on the successful countywide and cross-border programme of the existing Letterkenny Arts Centre at the Central Library and will have an enhanced emphasis on education and training, access and participation and on programmes for children and young people. It will establish a new partnership structure featuring some of the leading cultural providers in the North West. Partners in the project include Donegal County Council/Letterkenny Arts Centre, An Grianán Theatre, Earagail Arts Festival, Letterkenny Institute of Technology and the Nerve Centre Derry.
The Centre will be one of the finest facilities of its type in Ireland and the combined Regional Cultural Centre/ An Grianán Campus will be a major cultural and tourism resource for the North West region.
