Donegal County Development Board Summer Camp 18 - 29th July 2006

This week saw the commencement of the first ever " Donegal County Council funded County Development Board" Summer Scheme. The County Development Board is representative of the four main pillars in society, namely, the Local Government Sector, the Local Development Agencies, the State Agencies and the Community & Voluntary Sector the role of which is the co-ordination of social, economic and cultural development in the County.

Councillor Dessie Larkin, County Mayor, at the time, was instrumental in initiating this scheme, which was funded by Donegal County Council as part of its 2006 Revenue Budget.

This pilot scheme was able to cater for 60 kids from a wide range of areas within the Letterkenny Electoral Area. The scheme comprised of three fun days away and a week of arts and drama in An Grainan Theatre.

The main objective of the scheme was to provide an opportunity for kids to experience activities and events that they may not ordinarily have had a chance to experience.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following County Development Board partners who provided great assistance to me in organising this scheme, the Community Policing Unit in An Garda Siochana, An Grianan Theatre, The Glenwood Youth Project and the Letterkenny Community Development Project.

The scheme and its impact will be reviewed by the Council following its completion.

The pilot scheme will conclude with a public showcase this Saturday morning at 11.30 a.m. in An Grianan Theatre and all are welcome to attend.
