The Civic Amenity Site at Stranorlar has been successfully diverting hundreds of tonnes of waste from landfill, from forests and hillside for the past six months. The facility opened in December 2005 and has been a fantastic success catering for the recycling needs of the people of Stranorlar and surrounding areas. In the past five months approximately 494 tonnes of materials have been collected for recycling, this figure includes paper 123.9 tonnes, plastic 45.23 tonnes, textiles 10.415, tetra pak 7.37 tonnes, Cardboard 31.92 tonnes, metal 173.33 tonnes and Electrical and electronic equipment.
Since the introduction of charges in May 2006 the numbers of vehicles visiting the facility each week have decreased but the tonnages brought for recycling remain constant, this would indicate that people are bringing more materials less often to get best value for money. The charges are as follows:
SERVICE CHARGES
- €5 per car accessing all recycling facilities NOT INCLUDING BULKY GOODS
- €15 per car with BULKY GOODS for disposal (i.e. household furniture e.g. bed, sofa). This charge includes access to all recycling facilities.
- €15 per LARGE VEHICLE or VEHICLE WITH TRAILER for access to all recycling facilities including bulky goods.
METHODS OF PAYMENT
- €5 tickets are on sale in local stores, which advertise this service. Three such tickets are needed for the €15 charge.
- Credit and Laser card payment will be accepted on site.
There are now ten local shops selling the tickets in Ballybofey, Stranorlar and surrounding areas.
The facility is open three days per week - Thursday (12.30pm – 7.00pm) Friday & Saturday (8.30 – 2.00pm) and is fully staffed. The site is maintained to a very high level and this is aided by the diligent efforts of the public to separate their waste prior to their arrival at the site and the fact that no refuse is accepted on site. These factors make the visit to the CAS as enjoyable as possible for the public. A number of schools have also benefited from tours of the site that were extremely successful and will be facilitated again in the next school year.
