Presentation to Ms Lindel Buckley

On July 3rd, 2008, Cllr. Gerry Crawford, Méara, Donegal County Council, Mr. Michael McLoone, County Manager, Donegal County Council and Ms. Eileen Burgess, County Librarian, Donegal County Council met with Ms. Lindel Buckley at County House, Lifford to recognise and pay tribute to the work that she does in compiling historical records on Donegal for her website (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com).

Lindel is a native of New Zealand who fostered an interest in genealogy while recovering from serious illness. Her great, great grandmother was a teacher in Drumsallagh National School in Glendown before she emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860s. Lindel has dedicated her time to setting up her website and the information includes indexes to births, marriages and deaths; census and land records; maps and photographs. The website is totally free to access and is intended to be used by amateur genealogists researching their Donegal roots. Lindel's website has had over 250,000 visitors to date, many of whom have been helped by the resources Lindel makes available.

This is Lindel’s second visit to the County and the Méara and Manager were delighted to be given the opportunity to meet with Lindel and to pay tribute to her on the work she has done. On making a presentation of a framed poem entitled “Donegal Blessing” by Fintan Gogarty to Lindel, Cllr. Gerry Crawford, Méara, said that “it is a great privilege to meet with you in one of my first functions as Méara of Donegal and to thank you sincerely for your interest in the County and the work you have done to locate and preserve historical records for our future generations”.

The County Manager made a presentation to Lindel’s son, Liam who accompanied his mother on the trip. Eileen Burgess, County Librarian made a presentation of a book on the history of the life of Colm Cille to Connie Harley, a friend of Lindel’s who also accompanied her on the trip.
