Launch of Donegal Placenames Policy and Committee

Donegal County Council is launching their Placenames Policy and Committee next Thursday 23rd June. Glenveagh Visitors Centre will be the perfect setting for this exciting and interesting event, with its history, heritage, culture, topography and majestic beauty and scenery, naming every inch in this location is no problem!

Cllr Patrick Mc Gowan, Chairman of Donegal County Council, will perform the launch of the Placenames Policy and introduce the Committee. This event will be a new beginning in creating and instilling a greater awareness, understanding and pride in our land which is steeped in history, culture, heritage and nature, native only to this County.

Dónall Mac Giolla Easpaig, Chief Placenames Officer with An Roinn Gnóthaí Pobail, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta, who is a national expert on the topic, will be guest speaker at the launch.

The Placenames Committee members are representatives from the relevant sectors in the County, ie., Donegal County Council, County Development Board, Letterkenny Town Council, An Post, Gardaí, Emergency Services (Fire Services, Ambulance etc), Planning Officers, Architects, HSE, Heritage Officer, Placenames Experts, Donegal Historical Society, Tidy Towns Committee, etc, as well as two Elected Members from each Electoral Area in County Donegal.
This project is being led by the Pobal le Gaeilge Project in the Communtiy and Enterprise Directorate.
