Council committed to progressing the proposed Moville/Greencastle Sewerage Scheme in consultation with local community

Donegal County Council has reiterated its’ committed to progressing a Wastewater Treatment Scheme for Moville and Greencastle in close consultation with the local community. This Wastewater Treatment Scheme is required to address significant pollution of the Bredagh River and to ensure that the discharge of treated effluent to receiving waters is in full compliance with National and European legislation.

Donegal County Council appreciate the concern felt by residents in the area but state that the proposed Moville/Greencastle Sewerage Scheme will be on a par with the new treatment works in both Carndonagh and Stranorlar. The Council is successfully operating a tertiary treatment works at Carndonagh and the levels of bacteria in the treated sewerage is low enough to allow any receiving water to pass the water standard for Blue Flag beaches.

Donegal County Council is currently preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and is considering a number of potential impacts and mitigation measures under various different headings such as noise, odour, visual impact etc. This EIA will be submitted to An Bord Pleanala by way of a planning application. An Bord Pleanala will make the final decision in relation to this scheme.

Donegal County Council has entered into public consultation with residents in the Moville/Greencastle area and look forward to further consultation with these groups to ensure that the best solution is put in place for the Moville/Greencastle Sewerage Treatment Scheme that will address the existing raw sewerage discharges into the Bredagh River and Lough Foyle and comply with National and EU legislation including the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, the Shellfish Waters Directive, the Bathing Waters Directive and the Water Framework Directive.
