Recognition of Sporting Excellence by Donegal County Council

Donegal County Council has allocated €19,370.00 under it’s new Sports Bursary. The scheme provides support for training and development in sport and sporting related endeavours. An adjudication panel Chaired by the Mayor of the County of Donegal and representatives form the sporting sector and the Community,Culture and Enterprise Division allocated the awards to 15 applicants.

The recipients of the Sports Bursary include Francesca Bertolina, Inch Island (€450), Declan Boyle, Mountcharles (€1,000), Easkey Britton, Rossnowlagh, (€2,500), Noel Conlon, Arranmore Island (€1,000), Tara Deane, Dunkineely (€700), Jim Doherty, Newtoncunningham (€2,500), Denise Donaghey, Burnfoot (€400), Hugh Gallagher, Carrigart (€500), Chloe Magee, Raphoe (€2,500), Daniel Magee, Raphoe (€2,500), Ruairi McGonagle, Letterkenny (€820), Mary McLoone, Doochary (€1,000), Garry Murray, Newtoncunningham (€2,500), John Sweeney, Dungloe (€550), John Wallace, Dungloe (€450).

Successful applications covered a variety of sports including gymnastics, equestrian, martial arts, badminton, athletics, rugby, clay pigeon shooting and surfing.

A number of successful candidates will be competing or participating in specialised training abroad. Brother and sister Chloe and Daniel Magee from Raphoe will be studying at the Danish International Academy of Badminton for one year, while Rugby players Noel Conlon and Ruairi McGonagle will attend the prestigious Ponsonby Rugby Football Club in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Council is delighted to be in a position to assist in the development of such sporting potential and with the standard of applications received. It is confident that future applications will be of a similar standard.

In recognition of their talent and commitment the Mayor, Cllr. Dessie Larkin has invited recipients to a reception in the County House on Monday 26th June at 12 noon.
