Urban Renewal Project commences in Killybegs

Donegal County Council’s Urban & Village Renewal Section of the Planning & Economic Development Directorate wishes to announce the commencement of Phase II urban renewal works in the town of Killybegs. As an important harbour town in County Donegal, Killybegs will greatly benefit from this urban renewal project which will make Killybegs an even better place to live, shop, visit and do business.

Following the completion of Phase I urban renewal works in 1998 at The Diamond area, a public consultation process was undertaken during 2005 and 2006 to agree the scheme of works to be undertaken as part of Phase II. It was agreed that Phase II works be undertaken along the Main Street of Killybegs (from the Bay View Hotel to the junction of Main Street with Quay Street), as a continuation from the previous phase of works.

Works are anticipated to commence on 8th June 2009 and will provide for the undergrounding of services (ESB & Eircom), provision of new sewer and storm drainage, upgrading of water connections, provision of new kerbing, paved footpaths, provision of decorative street lighting and furniture and the definition of on street car parking. In order to keep disruption to a minimum, it is proposed to carry out the work in two sections, therefore only one half of the street will be closed to traffic at any one time. It is anticipated works should be completed within a 14-week period. Donegal County Council wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused during this construction period and would greatly welcome and appreciate your co-operation on this matter.

This project is funded by Development Contributions collected by the Council within the Donegal Electoral Area in accordance with Section 26 of the Planning & Development Act 1963 and Section 48 of the Planning & Development Act 2000.
