Donegal County Council committed to meeting recyling targets!
The temporary relocation of the bring bank facility from the carpark at St. Conal’s to the old Fire Station at High Road commenced earlier this week. This facility includes containers for paper, plastic, glass, cans and textiles and is being relocated on a temporary basis until a new modern facility is constructed in Letterkenny early next year.
Donegal County Council would like to thank the Hospital for their generosity in allowing us to locate the bring bank facility at St. Conals carpark, however, it became apparent to us over the last number of months that the facility had outgrown the site and a more easily managed facility was required. A number of possible locations were assessed throughout the town based on accessibility, security, traffic issues, space to service the banks, cost of leasing/buying site and adequate car parking. On this basis the site at the old Fire Station was deemed the most suitable.
The new temporary facility at the old Fire Station will be manned on full time bases, access will be restricted to specified times and the site will be monitored with CCTV. In addition lighting has been installed and the fencing around the site will be repaired.
It is not clear if planning permission is required to locate this facility temporarily and we are currently investigating this matter, however, Donegal County Council is fully committed to complying with all statutory requirements.
Donegal County Council is committed to meeting its recycling targets and we are encouraged by the increasing number of people recycling waste and have identified the need for the introduction of well managed recycling facilities throughout the county. To this end there are 55 bring sites throughout the County with one recycling centre in Carndonagh, which accepts 25 different waste materials for recycling.
In addition, funding has been secured for three new Recycling Centres in Stranorlar, Laghey and Letterkenny and construction of the site in Stranorlar will commence shortly. It is expected that planning permission for the sites in Laghey and Letterkenny will be granted in late March. These sites are of a very modern design and will accept a broad range of wastes.
The Council is also working to provide a service for the collection of dry recyclables for the householder and a number of Waste Collectors are about to roll out this collection service. This material will be collected using a second wheeled bin or sack directly from the householder making recycling easier for those who do not live close to a bring centre.
