Cllr. Dessie Larkin, Mayor of County Donegal unveiled plans today for the first ever Donegal County Mayor Charity Golf Classic. The primary aim of this Golf Classic is to raise funds for two very worthwhile charities, the Kidney Association and the Diabetes Association.
Speaking at the launch, Cllr. Larkin said that “I am keen to use this opportunity in my year as Mayor of Donegal County Council to undertake some worthwhile fundraising activity and both the Donegal branches of the Kidney Association and the Diabetes Association are charities that are very close to my heart”.
Siobhan Bates, Secretary of the Donegal branch of the Kidney Association thanked the Mayor for his support and said that “this launch is very timely as it ties in with the Irish Kidney Associations “Support Organ Donor Awareness Week” which takes place from 1st to 8th April 2006” and she urged everyone to lend their support by wearing the Forget Me Not Flower.
Representing the Donegal branch of the Diabetes Association, Danny McDaid expressed his delight at being a beneficiary of this event. He said that “whilst the financial support is very much appreciated, raising awareness of Diabetes, it complications and the supports available for sufferers here in Donegal will be tremendous”.
Cllr. Larkin stated that “I have been working on this fundraising idea for a number of months and given the wonderful Golf courses that we have in Donegal and my own fondness for the game, I thought that this would be an ideal opportunity to host a Charity Golf Classic”.
The Charity Golf Classic will take place in Donegal Golf Club, Murvagh on Thursday 11 May 2006. Local businesses, associations and other organisations are being invited to support this event by entering a team of four to play one of the truly great golf courses in Ireland. Other opportunities to support this event include sponsoring a Tee or a Green at a cost of €100 each.
Donegal Golf Course, designed by the legendary course architect Eddie Hackett, is one of the longest courses in Europe and is continually featured in Golf Worlds Top 100 Course in Ireland & Great Britain. The golf course offers a genuine challenge to the accomplished golfer and is an all round “true” test of golf.
Cllr. Larkin believes that the location and the two worthy charities should be enough to encourage local businesses, associations and other organisations to participate in this event. Anyone interested in participating should contact Kathleen Brown at 074 91 72206.
