Councillor John Boyle, Méara, Donegal County Council officially opened Laghey Civic Amenity Site on Monday 19th May. Laghey is the third Civic Amenity Site to open in Donegal and will cater for the recycling needs for householders in South Donegal.
After 26 weeks of construction at a cost of €820,000, Laghey opened its gates to the public on Friday 7th December 2007. It is a purpose built, manned recycling facility that accepts a wide range of materials from householders. It is open on a part-time basis with a mixture of free and charged facilities.
The site is open to the public every Thursday from 12.30pm – 7.30pm (late night), Friday and Saturday mornings from 8.30am – 2.30pm. The variety of materials that are accepted for recycling range from regular household items including glass, food and beverage cans, textiles, paper, cardboard, plastic, tetra pak (milk & juice cartons) to other waste types such as household batteries, car batteries, fluorescent lights, waste engine and waste cooking oil. A significant part of the site is also dedicated to the collection of waste electrical and electronic goods, for example computers, old televisions, cookers, washing machines, fridges, kettles, toasters etc.
There is a dedicated free area at the site where electrical and electronic equipment can be dropped off. The free area also includes banks for the collection of glass, cans and textiles. Access to avail of the remaining facilities at the site are available on a payment basis as follows,
- €5 per car accessing all remaining recycling facilities.
- €15 per LARGE VEHICLE or VEHICLE WITH TRAILER for access to all recycling facilities.
Payment is made by means of purchasing pre-paid tickets at €5 each available in the following local outlets,
- Kee’s Esso Filling Station, Laghey
- Kee’s Eurospar, Laghey
- Laghey Post Office, Laghey
- Ballintra Post Office, Main Street, Ballintra.
- CENTRA, 31 Clar Road, Donegal Town.
- Quinlan’s Shop, The Diamond, Donegal Town.
Payments may be made at the Civic Amenity Site by credit card or laser card. Cash is not accepted on site.
