Wood School Ardara - Presentation of Trees

Donegal County Council, through its Forest Link Initiative, presented the Wood School in Ardara with a selection of trees to commemorate the 12th annual National Tree Day on Thursday October 9th.

The Wood School in Ardara, a 13-pupil school with two highly dedicated teachers, has been co-operating with Donegal County Council over the past number of years on environmental programmes and has been successful in achieving the green flag for the past two years and are now busy preparing for the “three in a row”. Donegal County Council is delighted to be able to assist the school in their pro-active approach to raising awareness among the pupils of the important role they can play in improving our environment.

An objective of the Forest Link Initiative has been to highlight the importance of trees within a community, whether they be individual street trees, roadside trees, trees in a park or woodland or trees in residential gardens. Trees are recognised as improving the mental and physical health and well being of individuals. It is acknowledged that the presence of trees contributes to the socio-economic and environmental quality of a locality, promoting community ownership, civic pride and stimulating inward investment.

Attending the presentation were members of the Glenties Electoral Area Committee, Cllr. Maire Therese Gallagher, Cllr. David Alcorn and the Committee Chairman, Cllr. Terence Slowey, who officially presented the school with the trees. Also in attendance were John Jackson, Chairman of the Donegal CDB Forestry Forum, who conducted a very informative Question and Answer session with the pupils on the significant role trees have in improving our environment, executives of the Donegal County Council Forest-Link Initiative and representatives from Coillte, who kindly donated the trees.
