DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL LAUNCHES ONLINE DOG LICENSING SERVICE

Dog owners in County Donegal can now manage their dog licence Applications online.

Whether renewing a dog licence or buying one for the first time, the online system allows owners to apply, pay for and receive their dog licence online within minutes.

This convenient service can be accessed by logging on to www.donegalcoco.ie and following the link to “Renew Your Dog Licence Online”.

The user is guided through the process from application to payment, where they can print out their licence or receive an e-mail copy for electronic reference (much the same as online airline tickets). The system enables applications for single or group licenses and it is possible to register multiple dogs in the same transaction. When all requirements have been entered the system will allow users to make payment via credit or laser card.

The online solution is always available - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The cost of annual licences has remained unchanged. Licences cost €12.70 for an individual dog licence and €253.95 for a general dog licence (for owners with more than 20 dogs). Licences can also be purchased from any Post Office or Public Service Centre.

Under Section 2 of The Control Of Dogs Act, 1986 it is unlawful for any person to keep a dog unless they hold either a dog licence for that dog or a general dog licence.

Under Section 5 of the Act, certain exemptions apply such as those applying to guide dogs for the blind. A person guilty of an offence under the Act is liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of up to €1000 and/or up to 3 months imprisonment.
