'Held in Trust' Free Seminar

County Donegal Heritage Office, Donegal County Council in association with the County Donegal Heritage Forum and The Heritage Council presents:

 

‘Held in Trust’ Seminar

Dorrian's Imperial Hotel, Main Street, Ballyshannon, County Donegal

9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

 

The aims of the free seminar are to:

  • raise awareness and appreciation of the built heritage and streetscapes of County Donegal’s historic towns,
  • disseminate information and practical advice on the establishment of civic trusts,
  • investigate sources of information on the built heritage of our towns and villages,
  • promote best practice in the conservation of our built heritage, and
  • convey the heritage value and significance of our town’s streetscapes. 

 

Guest speakers at the free seminar will include:

  • Geraldine Walsh, Chief Executive Officer, Dublin Civic Trust who will talk about the purpose of a Heritage Trust and how to help create a sense of place in our towns and villages;
  • Simon Wall, Westport Town Architect, Mayo County Council who will outline the success of community and civic engagement with the built heritage of Westport, County Mayo;
  • Leah O’Neill, Heritage Projects Officer, Ulster Architectural Heritage Society who will consider the conservation of the historic built environment and the role of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society;
  • Mary McLaughlin & Caroline Dickson, Foyle Civic Trust who will discuss the role of a Civic Trust and, in particular, the work of the Foyle Civic Trust in its 25th anniversary year;
  • Anngret Simms, Emeritus Professor of Geography, University College Dublin who will address the origins of Irish towns and highlight different types of source material for the study of Irish towns; and
  • Duncan McLaren, Conservation Architect, Dedalus Architecture will provide advice on how to undertake a successful conservation project.

 

Seminar participants will receive a free information pack (including information on built heritage grant schemes) at registration and a light lunch will be provided.  There will be an open questions-and-answers session with the guest speakers before lunch.  The seminar is an action of the County Donegal Heritage Plan and is funded by Donegal County Council and The Heritage Council.
