National Heritage Week (August 20 - August 28, 2011)

National Heritage Week takes place from Saturday, August 20 until Sunday, August 28 this year. Since 1991, European countries celebrate their heritage over the course of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union. In Ireland, Heritage Week is coordinated by The Heritage Council in conjunction with the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht and Local Authority Heritage Officers. Over 1,300 events are taking place across the country throughout the week. The main aims of ‘Heritage Week’ are to raise awareness of our built, cultural and natural heritage and to encourage its conservation and preservation. There are over 80 events taking place across County Donegal in recognition of National Heritage Week and most of them are free. The Cultural Services Division of Donegal County Council is organising or hosting about 30 'Heritage Week' events.  The County Donegal Heritage Office has produced a free booklet of the ‘Heritage Week’ Event Guide for County Donegal which is available in libraries, public service centres, museums, heritage centres and tourist offices or on-line at:
