So you think we live in hard times? Then take a step into the past and meet the residents of Letterkenny Workhouse, when Donegal County Museum brings them to life for Letterkenny Culture Night 2010.
“The museum is actually housed in what was the Warden’s House of the Workhouse”, says curator Judith McCarthy. The Letterkenny Workhouse opened in 1845 and was still in use till the late 1920s, she adds.
On Friday September 24th, you will get a chance to meet some of the workhouse residents and hear their tales of joy and sorrow. “But be sure to mind your manners in the presence of the Workhouse Master who may put your name in the Punishment Book,” says Judith. This event is courtesy of Blue Eagle Productions, and director Jonathan Burgess, who scripted and directed the whole thing.
Tours start at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. For details contact the museum at 074 9124613 or go to www.donegal.ie.
