Dog Control

In co-operation with the Irish Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Donegal County Council employs two dog wardens who are active throughout the county checking dog licences and dealing with complaints about stray and dangerous dogs.

The dog pound at Glencar, Letterkenny, is open Monday to Saturday inclusive from 10am to 2pm. Unwanted or stray dogs can be left at the pound free of charge.

If you are looking for a new dog, why not come along to the pound and see if you can offer one of these dogs a new home. A fee off €31.50 for pups and €50 is applicable (this includes the licence fee of €12.70 for the first year and a refund of €19 available from the County Council if a dog re-homed from the pound is neutered.) Contact your local Veterinary Office for details (074 9126232).

Prospective dog owners should be aware that ownerships entails being responsible for the proper care and maintenance of the animal and that there is a financial cost involved. However a dog can indeed “be a man’s best friend” and can bring great pleasure and enjoyment to its owner

Each dog owner is responsible for ensuring that their dog(s) is licenced. A dog licence costs €12.70 and can be purchased at any Post Office in the country. All dogs must have a collar with information regarding the owner of the dog and owner of an unlicensed, or dog with no identification, or an out of control dog is liable to an on the spot fine of €30 for each offence or prosecution.
