N15 Lifford - Stranorlar - Ballybofey

Updated 23/08/10

Introduction

In Co Donegal, the N15 Route runs from the town of Lifford, passing through the towns/villages of Castlefin, Liscooley, Killygordon, Stranorlar/Ballybofey and continuing to Bundoran on the west coast. Lifford and Stranorlar are located approxiately 20km apart and along this length the route is a single carriageway road with sub-standard cross section, horizontal and vertical alignments and a deteriorating pavement condition. The project involves the design and construction of approximately 17km of new N15 National Primary Route.

The Need for the Project

The requirement for upgrading the length of road between Lifford and Stranorlar has been identified in the National Road Needs Study undertaken by the National Roads Authority. This study assesses the present level of service provided by National Primary and National Secondary Routes and determined the appropriate type of roadway to cater for traffic flows over the 20 year period 2000-2019. The route’s importance is also noted in Transport 21 as part of the Atlantic Corridor. Improvement of the National Primary Route network is also identified in the Donegal Employment Initiative Task Force Report as a priority to assist growth in employment and tourism in Donegal and the North West.

Description of the Project

The proposed project involves the design and construction of approximately 17km of new National Primary Road from Lifford to Stranorlar.
Four major junctions are proposed, one with the proposed new N14 at Lifford, one with the proposed Ballybofey/Stranorlar Bypass at Stranorlar and one each to provide access to the villages of Killygordon and Castlefinn.
The scheme has a Type 2 dual carriageway cross section.
A drawing showing the proposed layout of the project can be seen by clicking on the link below.

Proposed Layout

Current Status
A Route Selection Report was completed in late 2006, which identified a preferred route corridor.

Jacobs Consulting Engineers in conjunction with the Council’s National Road Design Office (NRDO) are actively progressing the Preliminary Design Phase of the project. The project design is progressing to a Dual Carriageway standard.

It is programmed that a Preliminary Design Report and Environmental Impact Statement for the project will be complete by end August 2010 and submitted to the National Roads Authority for approval to publish.
