Today the Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr. Ciaran Brogan formally launched the Councils new Public Wi-Fi network.

The Donegal County Council Public Wi-Fi network is now available in all the public areas of the 25 public buildings listed below:

  • Lifford HQ; Letterkenny PSC; Donegal PSC; Milford PSC; An Clochán Liath ISP; Carndonagh PSC and Local Enterprise Office Letterkenny.
  • Central Library, Letterkenny; Buncrana; Milford; Carndonagh; Moville; Raphoe; Lifford; An Clochán Liath; Gaoth Dobhair; Donegal Town; Ballyshannon; Bundoran and Ballybofey Libraries.

This network will allow visitors to the above locations to connect to Wi-Fi services during opening hours. This will facilitate access to online e-services, general browsing and a better user experience at the public buildings.

The public can log on to WiFi in the Libraries by using their Library card credentials.   Access to the WiFi in the other buildings is via an access code which is valid for 1 month.  To generate the access code you must supply your mobile number and the code will be sent to your phone via a SMS message.

Speaking at the launch Cllr. Brogan said that “I am delighted to be formally launching this new public Wi-Fi service which will facilitate both residents of and visitors to Donegal.  The growth in the use of mobile technology means that this type of service is needed by people visiting our buildings”.

Brian Boyle, Head of Information Systems stated that “this is being rolled out as part of the Donegal Digital Action Plan which has been developed as an inter-agency plan to promote the use of digital technologies in Donegal.   By providing free public Wi-Fi services we will be enabling the public to access online services and information that will allow for a better user experience at our buildings.”

Connecting to the Wi-Fi at the County Libraries will facilitate greater access to research materials, online reading resources and e-library services.

Donegal County Council partnered with SORD Data Systems on the installation of the Wi-Fi network.

As always, the Council advises considered use of the internet and asks the public to be aware of fraudulent websites and the possibility of viruses and other malware. It is important to protect your digital identity and frequently change passwords to have a safe online experience.
