Route 1 - North West Greenway Network

greenway linking Derry to Buncrana via Newtowncunningham

Derry via Pennyburn and Bridgend border crossing to Buncrana

Route 1 (32.5kms): commencing at Pennyburn in Derry and extending to Bridgend and continuing onto Buncrana via Tooban Junction and Inch. It is also proposed to take a spur from the vicinity of Tooban Junction towards Newtowncunningham, but primarily utilising existing quiet country roads. This latter connection will be subject to the statutory consultation process.

The Derry section of route 1, which was submitted to planning by Derry City & Strabane District Council in June 2020, came before the Planning Committee on 6 October 2021. While the Planner's recommendation was to 'refuse', the Members debated the application for over one hour before voting to reject the Planner's recommendation. A subsequent vote (during the same sitting) saw the application approved. The Council will now meet with the relevant authorities in the north to advance the project and we are confident that a contractor will be appointed in 2022 to construct the greenway.

In Donegal, it is intended to publish the Statutory Application for approval in 2022. As part of this application, the local authority will also publish its Compulsory Purchase Order schedule. In advance of its publication, all relevant landowners will be contacted.

Additionally, it would be the programme's vision that the section linking into Buncrana and Bridgend is incorporated into the EuroVelo 1 route network (https://pro.eurovelo.com/).
