2016 commemorations in Donegal will continue on Friday June 3rd at 7pm with the official opening of the 1916 Commemoration Garden in Ballymacool Town Park in Letterkenny. The event will see a mixture of music, poem and a reading of the proclamation along with the official duties befitting of a commemorative event.

The project emanated from a proposal by Letterkenny Municipal District Mayor Councillor Gerry McMonagle and he believes that events such as these play an important part in remembering those who gave their lives at the time and that inclusion of the community is key: “I believe its important that as a Council and a community we all acknowledge and remember those who sacrificed so much during the 1916 Rising, especially the leaders but also the many others who lost their lives. In keeping with other commemorative events in the county, we are aiming to make this an inclusive event and are therefore extending an open invite to all members of the community”.

It is expected that the Defence Forces will attend on the day and will be joined in the official commemorative functions by members of the Donegal Youth Council as well as other community groups and musicians.

Work on the garden has been completed by Town Gardener David Donnelly and his team and compliments the great work carried out in the park to date.

It will comprise a stoned area, a flagpole with tricolour, replica of the proclamation and as well as the seven trees to represent each one.

Donegal 2016 has seen an extensive programme of events and activities across the county to commemorate the events of the 1916 Rising, to reflect on our achievements over the last 100 years and to look towards our future.

The county programme has been part of the Ireland 2016 programme and contained events and initiatives across all seven strands of the national programme. The Donegal programme was developed following extensive community consultation.
