Summer Reading Star 2

Children all over Donegal are in with a chance to become a Star Reader this Summer with lots of fun activities in their local libraries.

“We are delighted to offer the nationwide Summer Stars Reading Adventure to the children in Donegal for the third year” says Donna Cavanagh from Donegal Library Service “this is a great way to keep your children’s reading levels up over the summer months and to develop a genuine love of reading and even better it’s free.”

Summer Stars is an exciting reading-based programme and children are invited to register and enjoy reading as many books as they like as part of their summer adventures. All participants will be given a Summer Stars Reading Card to record and track their own progress. There will be rewards and incentives along the way and a grand finale event at the end for all participants.

“You can simply call into your local library” says Donna Cavanagh “or even better you can ‘library-hop’ throughout the summer by using your library card and get Summer Reading Record Cards stamped at any of our libraries or Taobh Tíre centres throughout Donegal and nationwide”.

“Any items borrowed can be returned to your local library.  So if you’re on a family adventure for the day, why not call into one of our other branches to return your books and borrow something new from there?”

Library branches will be hosting activities during the summer including the Donegal Town library which will host a Summer Stars Storytime Party on Thursday 26th July while in Lifford Library you will have a chance to learn “How to train your Dog” on Tuesday 21st  August.  There will also be ‘Lego Play’ on Monday and Friday mornings in July in Buncrana Library and there will be Summer Stars Stories and Crafts on selected Tuesdays and Saturdays in July along with ‘Star Baking’ sessions in the Central Library in Letterkenny on July 10th and 13th.

For those who struggle to get their children interested in reading Donna Cavanagh suggests using the child’s interests and hobbies as a starting point saying “your local library is a great place to find books your child will actually want to read. With access to books nationwide, you can search for and request items of interest online and have it delivered to your local library.”

Expanding on the range of services available she explains how the range of reading material available has developed in recent years to include online resources such as comics, magazines and e-books which may help incentivise reluctant readers.
