Buncrana Student scoops top prize in Schools Slogan

LADDER Slogan Competition winner

Kaitlin Doherty from Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana has won the top prize in a European schools slogan competition.

The Schools Slogan Competition, co-ordinated by ALDA, the European Association for Local Democracy and implemented by Donegal County Council through the LADDER Project aims to foster an interest in, and raise awareness of, topics such as climate change, human rights and recycling to name but a few.

The aim of the Schools Slogan Competition was to come up with a slogan that would help spread the message of the importance of this type of development work in a simple, clear and direct way.

The winning slogan from Kaitlin “Don’t put your feet up, Help stop the heat up” saw Kaitlin claim the winning prize of an Ipad Air.  She was one of only 5 winners of Ipads across Europe from the 773 submissions.  Two other students from Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana were highly commended by the judging panel for their slogans and all three selected slogans will be promoted online on the ALDA website and used in promotional material during international events throughout the duration of the LADDER Project.

Donegal County Council’s EU LADDER project co-ordinator Joanne Kilmartin congratulating Kaitlin on her win explained that “the Schools Slogan Competition was only one of the activities of the LADDER Project which stands for Local Authorities as Drivers for Development Education and Awareness Raising and we were delighted to have three slogans from Scoil Mhuire selected by the European judging panel.

She further explained that “the project has successfully delivered a number of training sessions for local citizens in conjunction with Patsy Toland, Gorta Self Help Africa and the Change Makers Project”.  Donegal County Council is one of 26 European project partners and the only Irish Local Authority participating in the project.
