Donegal Pedals for Health and Sustainability with Lunchtime Wheelers Cycle for Bike Week

Donegal Tourism and Donegal County Council are delighted to announce the successful staging of their "Lunchtime Wheelers" cycle event, held as a key part of National Bike Week 2025 celebrations. This initiative, supported by the SUB project (Sustainable Biking Tourism project), saw members of the local authority staff embrace two wheels for a healthy and enjoyable break.

The "Lunchtime Wheelers" cycle offered participants a fantastic opportunity to experience the benefits of cycling for both physical and mental well-being, while also promoting sustainable travel options within Donegal. The leisurely 6km route around Donegal Town provided a picturesque backdrop, allowing cyclists to enjoy the county's natural beauty.

"We were thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm for our 'Lunchtime Wheelers' event," said Mary Daly Donegal Tourism (SUB Project Manager). "Bike Week is a fantastic platform to highlight the joy and practicality of cycling, and this event truly embodied that spirit. It's about encouraging people to incorporate more active travel into their daily routines, whether for leisure, commuting, or simply enjoying the outdoors."

She added, "Donegal County Council is committed to fostering healthier communities and promoting environmentally friendly modes of transport. The 'Lunchtime Wheelers' cycle, with the invaluable support of the SUB project, allowed us to demonstrate how easy and enjoyable it can be to choose cycling. Participants not only enjoyed a healthy lunch and a refreshing cycle but also gained valuable insights into cycling safety and the many benefits of regular exercise."

The event also featured information on the Cycle to Work Scheme and provided opportunities for attendees to try out electric bikes, showcasing accessible options for a wider range of participants. This aligns perfectly with the goals of the SUB project, which Donegal is a proud partner of, aiming to enhance the region's sustainable tourism practices through initiatives that promote green mobility and well-being.
The "Lunchtime Wheelers" cycle is just one of many events that took place across Donegal during Bike Week, demonstrating the county's commitment to encouraging a vibrant cycling culture for all ages and abilities.

Bundoran Waterworld officially opened following €2m investment

The ribbon was cut yesterday (Monday 14th July) on the new extension and refurbishments at Bundoran Waterworld. The owners of the facility, Donegal County Council, committed over €2m to upgrade the popular attraction including the addition of a new entrance hall, refurbishment of the changing village and installation of a new air handling unit.

Following over €2m of investment, Bundoran’s number one tourist attraction, Waterworld, will finally reopen its doors this Friday 11th July at 10am

Guests visiting the popular indoor water park will be treated to an enhanced customer experience including a new entrance, extended changing rooms and a more comfortable air atmosphere.
