The Historic Structures Fund recognises that Ireland’s historic buildings and structures combine to provide us with a valuable and unique built environment. Many of these are in great need of investment to ensure their preservation and continued use so that they remain a living part of our history and community life into the future.
The Historic Structures Fund is primarily on the conservation and enhancement of historic structures and buildings for the benefit of communities and the public.
While the primary responsibility to care for and maintain a protected structure rests with the owner, the new measure will invest essential capital in our valuable built heritage, and help the primary stakeholders of historic buildings to safeguard them into the future for the benefit of their communities and the public.
A feature of this initiative is that the Minister for Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht may assign funding to projects undertaken in partnership with organisations such as the OPW, Waterways Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Landmark Trust, the Irish Heritage Trust, and so forth.

Closing date for Applications being made through Donegal County Council is 4pm on Friday 28th January 2022.
**Closing date for Applications being made directly to the Department of Heritage is Friday, February 11th, 2022.
Please Note: Donegal County Council is limited in the number of projects that it is entitled to nominate to the Minister for Heritage for consideration. Therefore, applications will be screened thoroughly for appropriateness and completeness. A rigorous assessment process will be used to select projects for recommendation to the Minister of State for Heritage for further assessment and selection. In 2021 three projects were selected and forwarded to the Department by Donegal County Council, of which one was awarded offer of funding
