Disappointment as popular Crana Fest is cancelled due to Flood Damage

Crana Fest

The popular Buncrana based paddle event “Crana Fest” has been cancelled due to the aftermath of recent flood damage along the Crana River. Donegal County Council and Irish Water have advised that a detailed survey and extensive repair work is needed in response to the damage caused to paths, banks and bridges along the Crana river.

The annual event run by Inish Adventures now in its 9th year has grown in popularity attracting paddlers from all over Europe.

"Crana Fest is a 2-day event based on the Crana River in Swan Park – Buncrana. It's one of the biggest paddle events in Ireland  and is suitable for all disciplines of kayaking thus attracting participants from all over the world. It is disappointing that the event will not go ahead this year, both for ourselves and the wider paddling community who look forward to the event, and for the local businesses, the Crana anglers and all those who benefit from participants staying  in Buncrana and enjoying what the local area has to offer. " Adrian Harkin, Inish Adventures

The event also relies on the "whitewater" which is produced by a release of water from the Pollan Dam - which has been coordinated successfully each year in partnership with the council and Irish Water, in order to create the perfect paddling conditions that attracts kayakers from all over.

"Donegal County Council has been proud to work closely with the organisers  of Crana Fest making it one of the top paddle events not only in Donegal but in Ireland.  Unfortunately due to the substantial damage caused to the river and to Swan Park during last month's devastating floods, it would be unsafe to proceed with Crana Fest this year.  The Council understands that this is extremely disappointing for all involved especially for those who were planning to travel to Buncrana for this year's event, however, we are fully committed to continuing to work closely with the organisers to ensure that this popular event returns to the town next year" said Seamus Neely, Chief Executive, Donegal County Council.
