‘Donegal - a breathtaking experience’ says AER Committee members

AER Committee at Glenveagh

‘A breathtaking experience’ was how delegates from the Assembly of the European Regions (AER) Committee described their visit to Donegal this week.  Donegal played host to delegates from all over Europe who were attending the AER Committee conference in Radisson Hotel Letterkenny on E-health, Independence and Inclusion in the 21st Century.

This conference included site visits to the Donegal Centre for Independent Living, Cara House, Letterkenny Youth and Family Service and Glen Outdoor Early Education Centre along with visits to Letterkenny Institute of Technology and Co-lab.  These visits provided an insight into the work that takes place in promoting independence and inclusion and indeed on how academia is linking with industry to develop ways of using technology to improve health services in the county.

AER is the largest independent network of regions in wider Europe, bringing together regions from 35 countries and 15 interregional organisations. Donegal County Council, who hosted this conference, is the only local authority in Ireland to be a member of the assembly.

Donegal Youth Council also presented their work in promoting positive mental health among young people in Donegal.  Their innovative and creative approach was applauded by the AER Committee who awarded them with the MYFER (Most Youth Friendly European Region) award.

Cathaoirleach Cllr. John Campbell was delighted to have welcomed these delegates from all over Europe to Donegal saying “many of these delegates visited Donegal for the first time this week and we have been able to raise the profile of Donegal as an outward looking and progressive region and an important partner at this European level”.
