Explore the Vanished World of Donegals Landed Gentry

Landed Gentry exhibition

The exhibition “A Vanished World – the landed gentry of Donegal” opens in Donegal County Museum on Friday 15th September at 7.30pm.  It is curated by Donegal County Council’s Museum and Archives Services and explores the world of the landed gentry in Donegal in the decades before the foundation of the State.

From the social whirl of dinner parties and dances to the management of lands and gardens, the exhibition uncovers the stories of those who lived and worked in the vanished world of Donegal’s big houses.  Through archives, images and artefacts from the collections of the Archives and Museum Services as well as items on loan, the exhibition reveals what life was like on these country estates. For children there is a special dressing-up area where they can try on replica housemaid and butler costumes.

In association with the exhibition and as part of the forthcoming Culture Night Programme on the 22nd September, the Museum will welcome the Countess of Leitrim who is seeking staff for her country estate. Only those who are clean-living, honest and industrious need apply.

The exhibition forms part of the 2017 Creative Ireland Activation Plan for Donegal and was part funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.   The exhibition will be on display until February 2018 and admission is free.
