29/03/2022 - St. Patrick’s day delegation visits New York Fire Department (FDNY)

Cathaoirleach Cllr Jack Murry and Director of Emergency Services Garry Martin with crew members of Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9, Midtown Manhattan

As part of the St. Patrick’s day delegation to New York, the Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Jack Murray and the Director of Emergency Services, Garry Martin visited the New York Fire Department (NYFD) Fire Academy training centre at Randall’s Island, New York City, as well as visiting an NYFD fire house in midtown Manhattan which experienced the largest loss of life on 9/11.

All 15 crew members from Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9 that responded to the attack on the twin towers died on that day.  Cathaoirleach Cllr. Jack Murray commented “Seeing the training at the Fire Academy that the NYFD undergoes, alongside the sacrifices made by them on 9/11, brings home the selflessness and commitment of all fire services, including our own fire services in Donegal”.

The visit was facilitated by Battalion Chief NYFD Eddie Boles, a frequent visitor to Donegal and a friend to all in the Donegal Fire Service.
