The Donegal Sports Star Awards committee extends best wishes to Ruby Walsh following his announcement yesterday evening that he is retiring as a jockey after a hugely successful 24 years in horseracing. Ruby who signed off on a winning note at the Punchestown Gold Cup on board Kemboy, was our special guest at the annual Donegal Sports Star Awards function at the end of January.


President Michael D Higgins led the tributes to Ruby "on a remarkable and brilliant career". The 39-year-old said he was happy to retire from the saddle, having had the opportunity of riding so many great horses. During his career Walsh had over 2500 winners including 59 at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival. Ruby also had the distinction of winning all four Grand Nationals - Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh.. Last month Ruby won the Irish Grand National on Burrows Saint.
