26/09/18 Rudolstadt delegation to visit Letterkenny this weekend

Rudolstadt

Rudolstadt in Germany

A delegation of over 40 people from Rudolstadt in Germany will visit Letterkenny this weekend and will officially sign a twinning agreement between both towns on Monday morning (1 Oct) in the Letterkenny Public Service Centre.

This visit to Letterkenny follows on from a similar visit by a Letterkenny delegation to Rudolstadt in March this year.

Rudolstadt is a town in the German Bundesland of Thuringia, close to the Thuringian Forest and has a population of just over 22,500.  Rudolstadt is well known for its Anchor Stone Blocks of the Toy Company Richter and for its porcelain factories dating back to the 18th century.  It hosts Germany’s biggest folk, roots, and world music festival, TFF Rudolstadt each year.

Cllr. Seamus O’Domhnaill Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council is delighted to be hosting this delegation from Rudolstadt saying “we are keen to continue to foster and develop our connections and linkages with Rudolstadt and to further explore opportunities on working together to promote cultural and commercial ties that will be mutually beneficial to both towns”.

Cllr. Ian McGarvey, Mayor of Letterkenny MD agrees saying “I am looking forward to welcoming this delegation to Letterkenny.  Letterkenny has a lot of offer as Donegal’s largest town and I think a twinning arrangement with a town like Rudolstadt will be of enormous benefit.  Rudolstadt hosts Germany’s biggest folk, roots and world music festival each year and we have an opportunity to share in their success in our continued commitment to the development of our cultural sector not only in Letterkenny but in Co. Donegal”.

The delegation are set to arrive in Letterkenny on Friday evening at 6pm with an official welcome at the Radisson Hotel with Letterkenny Senior Accordion Band, followed by flag raising ceremony.

This will be followed by a welcome dinner in Rockhill House with a Donegal Tourism presentation followed by Irish traditional music and on Saturday the delegation will visit various parts of the county.

On Sunday evening at 8pm a Rudolstadt Photography Exhibition will be held in the Radisson Hotel, Letterkenny followed by a celebration night of music and stories featuring John Muldowney, Trudy & Cian O’Donnell, Comhaltas, Michael Carey, Dr. Seamus Maguire, Ukelele Orchestra and friends and Highland Radio presenter Donal Kavanagh and Peter Barry will jointly MC the event.  Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy this event.

On Monday morning the official signing of the Twin Town Agreement will take place in Letterkenny PSC at 10.30am and the group will then visit to St.Eunan’s College and Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

Cllr. Jimmy Kavanagh is one of the main organisers of the event and he is encouraging local people to come along on the Sunday evening to the Radisson Hotel to meet the delegation.

“The Photograph Exhibition in the Radisson Hotel will be a great opportunity for local people to come along and meet the delegation.  There will be music and refreshments and we are keen to let the members of the delegation experience the wonderful hospitality that both Letterkenny and Donegal are famous for.  We would also like to invite the local community to come along to Letterkenny Public Service Centre on Monday morning for the official signing of the Twin Town Agreement at 10.30am”.
