Irish Water, working in partnership with Donegal County Council, has completed assessments, upgrades and standardised disinfection systems in water treatment plants across county Donegal, as part of its National Disinfection Programme.

This work was delivered by Veolia Ltd, working on behalf of Irish Water, and has resulted in improvements to 15 plants in County Donegal, ensuring these plants continue to comply with the required drinking water regulations. These improvements also ensure security of supply and development opportunities for businesses.

As part of the project, operational upgrades have been completed in water treatment plants, public water supplies and pumping stations at sites including Arranmore Island, Buncrana (Slavery), Bundoran Urban (Lough Melvin), Carndonagh, Carrigart-Downings, Cranford, Donegal (River Eske), Shannagh (Fanad East), Tullyconnell, Frosses-Inver, Inishowen East (Redcastle), Inishowen West (Meendoran), Lough Mourne, Milford and Pettigo. The project involved initial assessments of the condition and performance of all public water supply sites in County Donegal to find out what work was required and following on from that, completion of necessary upgrades to the treatment infrastructure, monitoring instrumentation systems, control, telemetry and automation processes.

This work is being carried out as part of Irish Water’s Disinfection Programme, which will see €65m invested nationally to assess and upgrade water disinfection systems in plants and pumping stations across the country.

“Irish Water is delighted to have completed these essential works, which will improve the security of drinking water supply for residents and businesses in County Donegal,” said Martin Temple, Disinfection Programme Regional Lead, Irish Water.

“Improving water treatment processes will safeguard water supply in these areas, protecting the health of local communities and enabling economic and social development in these areas.

“Irish Water is addressing the size and scale of the challenge to improve water treatment nationally, which can be seen here in County Donegal where works have just been completed in 15 plants. Water treatment standards have been improved at these plants ensuring they are now compliant with national Drinking Water Quality Regulations.”

“Customers can phone Irish Water on Callsave 1850 278 278 if they have any further questions about this project,” added Martin.
