Got Household Hazardous Waste? People in Donegal Can Dispose It Safely and For Free!

  • The Regional Waste Planning Office and Donegal County Council have teamed up to host a FREE Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day in Letterkenny on August 31st
  • The initiative comes as over 50% of people in Ireland say they’re concerned about handling household hazardous materials
  • Citizens can dispose for free household hazardous items such as paints, cleaners, pesticides, automotive fluids, and more

Worried about that half-empty bottle of weed killer lurking in your garage? You're not alone! A recent survey found that over 50% of people in Ireland are concerned about handling hazardous household materials. But hold onto your hats, Donegal, because help is here!

Funded by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, the Regional Waste Planning Office and Donegal County Council are teaming up to host a FREE Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, August 31st, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at Donegal County Council’s Letterkenny Recycling Centre, Carnamuggagh, F92EW80.

That's right, you can finally say goodbye to those potentially harmful products taking up space under your sink and in your shed. Some of the most common household hazardous products include oil-based paints, bleach, herbicides and aerosols.

The collection day will accept household items that contain potentially harmful components. Please ONLY bring the following items:

  • Household Chemicals: Disinfectants, detergents, bleach, oven cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, and other potent cleaning agents
  • Personal Care Products: Nail polish, nail polish remover, aerosols, and other chemical-based cosmetic products
  • Garden Chemicals: Pesticides, herbicides, and other chemical treatments used in lawn and garden care
  • Paints and Solvents: Leftover paint (limit 10 cans/tubs per customer), varnishes, thinners, strippers, inks, glues, resins, and other solvent-based products
  • Automotive Products: Used motor oil, petrol, diesel, antifreeze, surface polish, and other automotive fluids

Note: Hazardous waste such as medicines and gas canisters will not be accepted.

"Mishandled hazardous waste can be dangerous for our environment and our health," says Carol Sweetnam of the Regional Waste Management Planning Office. "This event is all about making it easy for householders to do the right thing and dispose of these materials safely.”

Commenting on the event, Matthew Byrne, Waste Regulations Officer at Donegal County Council said, “It’s really important that hazardous products are not placed in the general waste bin.”

This free initiative is for hazardous household waste only. No commercial or farm waste will be accepted on the day. Don't miss this chance to properly dispose of your household hazardous waste for FREE! Just remember to bring items in their original containers with legible original labels. Normal civic amenity site charges apply if bringing materials, other than hazardous waste.

Success of bespoke organic compost in treatment of Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed (Reynoutia japonica) is an herbaceous perennial native to East Asia. Commonly found on volcanic slopes, its extensive root system allows it to quickly reemerge following eruptions, producing large amounts of nitrogen-rich leaves and carbon-heavy stems. As these decompose, they contribute to new soil formation. Knotweed can grow in a variety of soil types, habitats, and pH conditions but tends to favour disturbed, low diversity, bacterially dominated soils with little organic matter and high light exposure.
