Nominate Your ‘Heritage Hero’

Do you know of a person or group who have worked tirelessly to protect and promote heritage in your area?  If you do, then The Heritage Council wants to hear from you.  The public are invited to nominate who they feel deserves the ‘Heritage Hero’ award by completing the short nomination form on the Heritage Week website at https://www.heritageweek.ie/awards by Tuesday, September 24.  The Heritage Hero award is part of the National Heritage Week Awards that take place annually to celebrate outstanding heritage projects and events. 

National Heritage Week took place from August 17 to August 25 and there were over 120 events and two digital projects in County Donegal.  The National Heritage Awards ceremony will take place in November.  As well as the National Heritage Hero Award based on nominations from the public, Heritage Week event organisers can nominate their projects or events for the following awards:

  • Connections, Routes & Networks Award
  • Wild Child Event Award
  • Water Heritage Day award
  • Inclusive Heritage Award
  • Irish Language Award
  • Sustainability & Climate Award
  • Intangible Cultural Heritage Award
  • County Award

Two National Heritage Week Awards were awarded to Donegal-based projects last year: 

  • Togra Fiontar and Cultúr Uladh won the Irish Language Event Award for its Feile Saibhreas na Síoraíochta.  The Irish Language Event Award was awarded to the best event or project that took place through the Irish language and encouraged participation or activity in the Irish language. 
  • The Inishowen Rivers Trust in partnership with The Loughs Agency won the Water Heritage Award for its Culdaff River Heritage Workshop.  The Water Heritage Award was awarded to the event or project that best explored how a canal, river, lake or sea shaped the heritage of a locality or celebrated water as an integral part of our natural heritage, as well as being a vital part of our future, or reflected on what more we can do to conserve this valuable resource. 

County Donegal has over 250 known heritage groups and one of the highest participation rates in heritage in the country so be sure to nominate your Heritage Hero on the Heritage Week website at https://www.heritageweek.ie/awards by Tuesday, September 24.

Heritage Council scheme supporting heritage organisations

The Heritage Organisations Support Fund, that provides financial support to not-for-profit non-governmental organisations working in the heritage sector, is now open for applications. The Heritage Council scheme enables heritage organisations to fund staff salaries, rent costs, the hiring of new staff, training and skills development and piloting new ways of working. Applications can be made on-line on the Heritage Council’s on-line grants management system until 5 p.m. on Monday, 26 January 2026.

Donegal Landowners Invited to Create a ‘Hare’s Corner’ for Nature – Hassle-Free Support Available

County Donegal landowners now have a unique opportunity to make space for nature on their land. From January 1st to January 18th, 2026, applications will open for The Hare’s Corner, an innovative biodiversity initiative coordinated by Burrenbeo Trust in partnership with the Donegal County Council.

Funding available for Donegal’s archaeological monuments

Donegal County Council is inviting applications to the Community Monuments Fund until 4 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2026 for the conservation of archaeological monuments. Funding of up to €100,000 is available for essential repairs and capital works for the conservation and repair of archaeological monuments (Stream 1), up to €30,000 for the development of Conservation Management Plans or reports aimed at identifying measures for the conservation of archaeological monuments and improving public access (Stream 2) and up to €30,000 for enhancement of access and interpretation at archaeological monuments including on-line or virtual access (Stream 3). The Community Monuments Fund is an initiative by the National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage in partnership with local authorities.
