Minister for Justice meets Donegal Local Community Safety Partnership
Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O’Callaghan T.D. has met with the new Donegal Local Community Safety Partnership during his recent visit to Donegal on Friday 5th December.
During the meeting local issues were raised and discussed with the Minister including, the need for some new Garda buildings, Garda Barracks opening times, the need for the additional superintendent to be appointed to Letterkenny, the youth diversion programme, school programmes and the need for a community policing programme. It was agreed that there is a need for better visibility of Gardai on the ground.
Minister O’Callaghan said he was delighted to see the Local Community Safety Partnership up and running and welcomed the broad representation of members on it representing the different sections of our community. Representatives from minority communities said it was important that a modern police force reflected the people they serve.
There was an acknowledgement that Donegal has challenges due to the rural nature of the county.
Partnership coordinator Francis Conaghan informed the Minister that the partnership will develop a work programme for 2026 and initiate the development of a Donegal Community Safety Action Plan guided by the National Strategy for Safer Local Communities once adopted, and both local and county wide issues will factor into the plan with identified priority actions to be worked on by the Donegal Local community Safety Partnership over the next three years.
