Climate Action Week is coming to a place near you!  Climate Action Week is a national campaign aimed to promote local climate action and sustainability through a number of exciting talks, workshops, and creative collaborations that empower action. From sustainable living household energy saving and repair & reuse workshops, there’s something for everyone!

What is Climate Action Week?

Climate Action Week is coordinated by An Taisce since 2017, on behalf of the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, #ClimateActionWeek and brings together individuals, communities, organisations, and policymakers to tackle the climate crisis through creativity, collaboration and shared learning experiences.

Climate Action Week in Donegal

A range of climate action events have been co-ordinated locally by the Climate Action Unit of Donegal County Council.  Speaking on the initiative, Fiona Kelly, Community Climate Action Officer said, “We are delighted with the response from community groups to Climate Action Week 2025.  Climate Action Week is a chance for everyone to get involved in climate action by learning how to become more energy efficient, support the circular economy and living more sustainably while supporting biodiversity”.

For young people we have collaborated with the National Parks & Wildlife Service on the Wainfest Children’s Art Competition and encourage children and young people to enter and win some amazing prizes.  Green Schools have organised ‘Walk to School’ Week also which encourages students to walk, cycle or use ‘Park & Stride’ for their school journey to promote physical and mental health, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality. 

The Finn Valley ICA Guild and have organised a Repair & Reuse Workshop at The CAKE Centre, Killygordon and Spraoi agus Sport have organised a Pop-Up Repair Café at the Spraoi agus Sport Garden Centre, Carndonagh.

The Eco Buncrana Strategy & Action Plan is being launched on Tuesday, featuring a series of mini-workshops including sessions on food preservation, care & repair, crafting with waste fabrics and planting community fruit trees.

Donegal Libraries are hosting a range of talks and workshops on Energy Saving Tips for the Home, an EU Climate Report Workshop and a schools workshop on Bioeconomy and the Ocean.

Changemakers Donegal and Letterkenny Tidy Towns have organised a ‘Rethinking Food Waste’ Workshop in Dillons Hotel and Comhar Fhanáda  & Gleann Bhairr are celebrating the dark skies in Fanad with a Bat Safari, meeting at Fanavolty Hall.

Rip current warning ahead of August Bank Holiday weekend

Rip currents are a major cause of accidental drownings but can be notoriously difficult to spot. The Irish Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland are pleading with swimmers and particularly those who may be visiting an area they are not familiar with over the Bank Holiday weekend, to learn the warning signs, read local safety notices and seek advice before entering the water.
