A new Community based Environment project focusing on the rural environment was launched at the Convoy Community Celebration 2025 in St Mary’s Hall, Convoy on Saturday 27th September. The PEACEPLUS Champions of the Environment will be delivered by Deele Community Anglers CLG, a local community-based sporting organisation with extensive experience in environmental awareness.

The event was an opportunity for people to learn more about the project and the activities they can try out. But it was also a public information event where the local community was able to learn more about support and help that was available to them from other organisations and agencies.

This flagship initiative, delivered under Theme 2: Thriving and Peaceful Communities, is supported by a significant investment of €80,000.00. It is one of 32 cross-community projects within Donegal’s ambitious €7.6 Million PEACEPLUS Local Community Action Plan.

The project aims to give local people in the wider rural community an opportunity to explore environmental issues of concern to them. Participants will explore and engage with their local environment, completing local actions designed to improve the environment, heritage biodiversity and water quality management.  The project will engage with the network of community-based groups, schools and other interested organisations across East Donegal and will deliver a series of best practices visits - identifying gaps, challenges and opportunities.

The Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council and Chair of Donegal County Council, Cllr Paul Canning launched the programme by congratulating Deele Community Anglers on their success he stated, “Driven by the commitment and passion of Deele Anglers, this programme is a shining example of how environmental stewardship can serve as a powerful tool for peacebuilding and community cohesion. The Champions of the Environment PEACEPLUS Programme centres on personal development, cultural enrichment, and cross-community collaboration. It brings people together from diverse backgrounds to explore and connect with our county’s rich natural heritage and biodiversity - instilling a sense of responsibility and pride in protecting our local habitats.”

This new project is an opportunity for the club to work with the wider community on a series of environmental improvements and activities.

The CEO of Donegal Local Development Company, Padraic Fingleton was also in attendance and warmly welcomed the programme, recognizing the wealth of experience and interest in the community across East Donegal.

The chair of Deele Community Anglers, David Scott added, “we are delighted that PEACEPLUS has entrusted us with this funding, it is another step along the way for us and the local community to play a part in managing environmental issues, anyone interested in being part of this project can reach us through our Facebook page, where our team will be happy to help, or by calling at our office at Convoy Enterprise Centre”
