Deele Community Anglers Launch Countywide “Peacebuilding Through the Environment” Climate Action & Mitigation Programme
Deele Community Anglers CLG has officially launched Peacebuilding Through the Environment, a new countywide community climate action and mitigation programme funded under the PEACEPLUS Programme.
Delivered under Theme 2: Thriving and Peaceful Communities, the project is supported by a significant investment of €200,000 and is one of 32 cross-community initiatives forming part of Donegal’s €7.6 million PEACEPLUS Local Community Action Plan.
The project was launched at Mongorry Lake, outside Raphoe, on Tuesday 3rd of February. It will be delivered by Deele Community Anglers CLG, a local community organisation with extensive experience in environmental awareness, conservation, and cross community engagement.
The launch event provided an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the programme, explore the activities on offer, and understand the supports available to grassroots groups across the County.
Speaking at the event, the Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council and Chair of the Donegal PEACEPLUS Partnership, Councillor Paul Canning, said:
“This programme marks the beginning of a collaborative journey, one that will help foster a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Donegal. Driven by the dedication, hard work, and passion of Deele Community Anglers, it is a shining example of how local environmental stewardship can be a powerful tool for building and sustaining cross-community and cross-border partnerships. By working together to care for our shared environment, we can take small but meaningful actions that create lasting networks of care, not only for our ecosystems, but for the communities that depend on them.”
Participants will engage directly with their local environment and take part in practical actions designed to enhance biodiversity, protect heritage, and improve water quality management.
The programme will work with community-based groups, schools, and other interested organisations throughout the county, supporting them to identify environmental challenges, gaps, and opportunities for action within their own areas.
Peacebuilding Through the Environment focuses on climate actions relating to biodiversity, water, wellbeing, equality, best practice, and environmental enhancement. It seeks to achieve long-term impact in relation to climate adaptation across Donegal, while also supporting personal development, cultural enrichment, and cross-community and border collaboration.
This new Programme is an opportunity for the club to work with the wider community on a series of environmental improvements and activities.
The chair of Deele Community Anglers, David Scott added, “ This new Programme is an opportunity for the club to work with the wider community on a series of environmental improvements and activities. we are delighted that PEACEPLUS has entrusted us with this funding, it is another step along the way for us and the local community to play a part in managing environmental issues, anyone interested in being part of this project can reach us through our Facebook page, where our team will be happy to help, or by calling at our office at Convoy Enterprise Centre”
By bringing people from diverse backgrounds together to explore Donegal’s rich natural heritage, the programme aims to foster a shared sense of responsibility and pride in protecting and safeguarding local habitats.
