Cllr Michéal Naughton, Cathaoirleach for the Municipal District of Donegal joined by elected members of the Donegal Municipal District, officially turned the sod for the N15 Laghey Roundabout Safety Project on Monday 16th of February.

This road safety improvement scheme, fully funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), will replace the existing N15/R232 priority junction with a new single lane roundabout. The project aims to resolve long-standing safety concerns and incorporates new active travel facilities for vulnerable road users.

Damian McDermott, Senior Engineer of Donegal County Council welcomed the members in attendance and thanked the project team of Johnny McGill, Thomas Fox from the National Roads Office and Regional Road Safety Engineer Karen Hartin on their work getting the project to construction.

Byran Cannon, Director of Service Roads & Transportation of Donegal County Council, noted:

“Thank you to TII for providing the funding for this important safety scheme. This investment will bring long-term benefits for everyone who lives, works, or travels through the area. The N15 is a vital gateway into Donegal and the wider northwest, and this project shows our ongoing commitment to making our roads safer and more efficient.

We’d like to thank the people of Laghey for their support, along with the local representatives who have backed the scheme. We also want to wish the Contractor, and the site supervision teams the very best as construction gets underway.”

Cllr Michéal Naughton commented: “I’m really pleased to see this project getting underway. This stretch of the N15 has seen a lot of collisions over the years and this upgrade will make a genuine difference for everyone.

The locals here have been calling for this improvement for quite some time, and I want to thank them for working so positively with the NRO, supporting the scheme, and helping bring the project to this stage. By replacing the existing junction with a modern roundabout, we’re not only improving traffic flow we’re also taking meaningful steps to improve road safety, save lives, and make our roads more accessible for everyone.”

The Construction Contract is awarded to Northstone Materials Ltd, with Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers acting as the Employer Representative for Donegal County Council. Works are expected to reach completion in the fourth quarter of this year.
