Donegal County Council (Presentation of Kerbside Waste for Collection) Bye-laws, 2024
The Donegal County Council (Presentation of Kerbside Waste for Collection) Bye-Laws 2024 came into effect on 31st December 2024. Their objectives are to:
- Encourage environmentally responsible waste management by households and businesses.
- Promote better segregation of waste to improve recycling.
- Ensure only authorised waste collectors are used to collect and transport waste.
- Reduce illegal dumping and the backyard burning of waste.
Key Provisions
- Applies to all kerbside waste – both household and commercial.
- Proof of proper waste disposal – all waste producers must show they are managing their waste responsibly by:
- Using an authorised waste collection service, or
- Participating in a bin-sharing arrangement, or
- Bringing waste directly to an authorised facility such as a Civic Amenity Recycling Centre.
- Mandatory segregation of waste – to improve recycling rates; bins must also be placed safely without obstructing footpaths or roads.
- Landlords’ responsibilities – for properties rented for less than one month, landlords must ensure proper waste disposal arrangements are in place.
- Apartments and multi-user dwellings – adequate facilities for proper segregation and storage of waste must be provided.
