Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne has announced the continued implementation of the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2026 and Historic Thatch Buildings (HTB) 2026. Both the schemes are funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and administered by Local Authorities.

The purpose of the BHIS Historic Thatched Buildings Stream is to protect the heritage value of historic thatched roof buildings across Ireland. All historic thatched structures in County Donegal are eligible under this scheme and it does not need to be on the Record of Protected Structures. This year’s grant scheme will provide support for large-scale re-thatching projects up to €20,000. The funding can provide for up to 80% of the total capital costs of works. 

The intention of the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2026 is to assist with the repair and conservation of historic buildings and structures within Conservation Areas that are protected under the Planning and Development Acts. This scheme aims to support a significant number of projects across the country as well as the employment of skilled and experienced conservation professionals, craftspeople and tradespersons in the repair of the historic built environment. Grants of between €2,500 and €50,000 are available. The scheme also incorporates streams for vernacular buildings and historic shopfronts.

The closing date for receipt of applications for both schemes is 4pm on Friday 26th September, 2025. Over €243,000 for Conservation of County Donegal’s Archaeological Monuments

Archaeological monuments in County Donegal are set to benefit from funding under the 2026 Community Monuments Fund, with a total allocation of €243,737 to support conservation, maintenance, accessibility and interpretation works at some of the county’s most significant historic sites. The Community Monuments Fund is an initiative of the National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, delivered in partnership with local authorities including Donegal County Council.

Support for farmers to conserve traditional farm buildings

Funding is available to farmers for the conservation of County Donegal’s traditional farm buildings under the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme administered by The Heritage Council in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.  The aim of the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme is to ensure that traditional farm buildings and other related structures that contribute to landscape character and are of heritage value are conserved for agricultural use.  Only on-line applications will be accepted and the closing date for receipt of applications to the grant scheme is 5.p.m. on Monday, May 18.  Farmers interested in applying to this year’s scheme are encouraged to attend the short information webinar at 12 noon on Friday, April 17.  Further details and application forms are available on The Heritage Council website at:  www.heritagecouncil.ie and on (086) 025 9202.

Thatch Repair Grant Scheme Opens

Donegal County Council’s award-winning Thatch Repair Grant Scheme has opened for applications.  Now in its eighth year, the scheme assists the owners and occupiers of historic thatched dwellings and businesses with their maintenance and repair.

Motor Taxation 9.15am to 12.15pm, and 1.15pm to 3pm (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Cash Office 9am-12.30pm, and 1pm-4.00pm (Monday to Friday)
