19/12/23 Tip O’Neill Annual Irish Diaspora Award – Open Call to Artists for design of new award

 

Donegal County Council is seeking submissions from artists / designers to submit proposals for the re-design of the Tip O’Neill Annual Irish Diaspora Award for 2024 and beyond. The Tip O’Neill Annual Irish Diaspora Award, presented annually by Donegal County Council, seeks to recognise those who have excelled in their chosen field whilst honouring their contribution to Ireland and its Diaspora.

The closing date for submission of applications is Friday, 19th of January 2024.

 

Shortlisted successful applications will be informed by 26th of January 2024.

BRIEFING DOCUMENT

 

Donegal County Council would like to invite artists/designers to submit proposals for the design of a new award which will be presented to the awardees of the Tip O’Neill Annual Irish Diaspora Awards for 2024 and beyond.

 

The Award

 

The Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Award, presented annually by Donegal County Council, seeks to recognise those who have excelled in their chosen field whilst honouring their contribution to Ireland and its Diaspora.

 

The award was first initiated in 2012 as a means of commemorating the centenary of the birth of the late Tip O’Neill. Tip was a liberal Democrat and an influential member of the US House of Representatives. His maternal grandparents were native to County Donegal.

A cast of the late Tip O’Neill’s hand was used for the award from 2012 until 2022.

 

 

 

 Key Points for Artists/Designers

 

Artists/designers interested in submitting proposals should note the following key points:

The design should give recognition to the late Tip O’Neill

The design should be relevant to the role of our Diaspora.

Weight and height of the award

Weight of the award to be no greater than 10kg

Height of the award to be no higher than 40cm

 

 

Stage 1 Applications

 

Interested artists/designers can submit up to three concept proposals per person/company/partnership.

 

Artists should provide the following as part of their submission:

 

Documentation of previous work: please submit up to 3 examples of relevant previous work; photographs and links to relevant videos will be accepted.

 

A statement that outlines how you will approach this commission (500 words maximum). Please indicate why you are interested in this commission, and why you feel your approach to the design is best suited to this particular brief. The proposal should also demonstrate your experience of creating original, high-quality designs and of working through collaborative processes.

 

Set out your proposed approach to undertaking this assignment including engagement with Donegal County Council and timescale for development and delivery of the proposal. Please note the final deadline for production and delivery of this assignment is 30th of June 2024.

50 units

 

Donegal County Council proposes to shortlist up to three designs for stage two of the process.

Shortlisted applicants will be informed by Friday, 26th of January 2024.

 

 

Stage 2 Applications

 

During stage two of the process, the artist/designer will be required to present a prototype of their design. Artists/designers shortlisted to stage 2 will be paid a fee of €200 for development of the prototype. Artists will have three (3) weeks from short listing to develop a prototype for consideration to Donegal County Council.

 

Prototypes for consideration to be produced and submitted for consideration by Friday 16th of February 2024.

 

Selection of designer to be completed by 26th of February 2024.
