Experiencing the Irish Revolution in Donegal, 1919 – 1925, Essays (Ben Rogers)

The Decade of Centenaries Book of Essays Experiencing the Irish Revolution in Donegal has been published and is now also available online. Last year, the County Archives and County Museum (Culture Division of Donegal County Council) appointed Dr Ben Rogers as historian in residence, part of its Decade of Centenaries programme 2021.  As Historian in Residence, Dr Rogers researched some of the County Archives major Collections - The Joseph Murray Collection, Board of Guardians (workhouse) minutes books and Rural & Urban District Council minute books, from 1918 – 1925.  Many of these collections, spanning the first two decades of the 20th century, have been digitised and are online on this website.   
Based on his research last year, Dr Rogers has now produced a book of six essays in collaboration with the Archives Service: Experiencing the Irish Revolution in Donegal, 1919 – 1925; chapters are as follows:
  • Revolutionary Experience in Donegal: Joseph Murray and No. 4 Brigade (First Northern Division);
  • Pension Applications and the Revolutionary Experience of Women in Donegal, 1919-1925;
  • Rural District Councils in Donegal, 1918-20: Constitutional Nationalism in Transition;
  • Rural District Councils in Donegal, 1920 – 1925: A Revolution in Local Government?
  • Urban District Councils in Donegal, 1919-1925: The Revolution in the Towns; 
  • Poor Law Reform and Healthcare Provision in Revolutionary Donegal, 1919-1923

Democracy and Change: The 1920 Local Elections in Ireland

1920 Local Elections Commemorative Booklet. 2020 marked the centenary of the local elections of 1920 which were pivotal in the history of local government in Ireland. To mark these events, and because of their significance for the struggle for independence, the Dept. of Housing, Local Government & Heritage commissioned a publication from the Local Government Archivists and Records Managers to commemorate the 1920 local elections.  Edited by archivists Niamh Brennan (Donegal) and Grainne Doran (Wexford) with the title 'Democracy and Change: the 1920 Local Elections in Ireland' this publication is available to download free of charge, in Irish and in English.

Images in the booklet from Donegal’s Archives Collection include a letter from the Proportional Representation Society in 1919; a photograph of the new Returning Officers’ tables for PR 1920 elections; instructions to the presiding officer; a Notice of Elections; plus a record of the transfer of successful Donegal candidate Edward Kelly’s surplus votes.
